The service industry is an integral part of the global economy, with tourism being a prominent sector within it. Tourism managers face unique challenges and opportunities when marketing their services, which differ significantly from marketing tangible goods. Understanding the characteristics of the service industry is essential for effective marketing, as these characteristics directly influence the marketing mix elements—product, price, place, promotion, people, process, and physical evidence.

### Characteristics of the Service Industry 

1. Intangibility:  
   Services cannot be touched, seen, tasted, or stored before purchase. Unlike physical products, services exist only at the point of delivery. For example, a hotel stay or a guided tour is intangible; customers evaluate the service based on promises, reviews, and brand reputation. This makes it challenging to convey the value or quality of the service beforehand.

2. Inseparability:  
   Production and consumption of services occur simultaneously. For instance, a tourist cannot separate the delivery of a city tour from the consumption experience; the guide’s performance is experienced in real time. This characteristic emphasizes the importance of the service provider's interaction with customers.

3. Perishability:  
   Services cannot be stored or inventoried. If a flight departs with empty seats, the revenue opportunity for those seats is lost forever. This perishability creates a constant pressure to match demand with capacity, particularly in tourism, where seasonality plays a significant role.

4. Variability:
