Question
Explain the following passages with reference to the context.
1. “Stay, you imperfect speakers, tell me more.
By Sinel’s death I know I am Thane of Glamis;
But how of Cawdor? The Thane of Cawdor lives,
A prosperous gentleman; and to be king stands not within the
prospect of belief,
No more than to be Cawdor. Say from whence
You owe this strange intelligence? Or why
Upon this blasted heath you stop our way
With such prophetic greeting.”
2. “Is this a dagger which I see before me,
The handle toward my hand? Come, let me clutch thee: -
I have thee not, and yet I see thee still.
Art thou not, fatal vision, sensible
To feeling as to sight? Or art thou but
A dagger of the mind? A false creation,
Proceeding from the heat-oppressed brain?”
3. “How strange it is to be talked to in such a way! You know, I’ve
always gone on like that. I mean the noble attitude and the thrilling
voice. I did it when I was a tiny child to my nurse. She believed in
it. I do it before my parents. They believe in it.”
4. “The old order changeth, yielding place to new,
And God fulfils himself in many ways,
Lest one good custom should corrupt the world.
Comfort thyself: what comfort is in me?
I have lived my life, and that which I have done
May He within himself make pure!”
1.
Here, Macbeth is speaking to the three "weird sisters," who have just hailed him as the thane of Cawdor and said that he "shalt be" the king of Scotland at some point in the future. In terms of the lines' meaning, Macbeth says that he understands that, once his father, Sinel, died, he inherited the title of thane of Glamis, but he does not understand how he could be the thane of Cawdor, because the man who holds that title is still living and quite prosperous (as far as Macbeth knows). Further, Macbeth says, frankly, that it does not make any sense that he could become king.
However, what Macbeth does not know is that the current king, Duncan, has already learned of the old thane of Cawdor's treason, ordered the old thane's execution, and awarded Macbeth the title of thane of Cawdor. This happened in act 1, scene 2, far from the battlefield where Macbeth and Banquo were fighting. Macbeth's speech, in scene 3, is significant because it shows that he is still unaware of the king's gift to him. Then, when the king's messengers arrive and tell him that he has been named the thane of Cawdor, it sounds as though the weird sisters actually prophesied the future (rather than simply relating a fact Macbeth did not yet know). When he comes to believe that the sisters are capable of predicting the future, it prompts him to begin to consider how to make the rest of their supposed prophecy come true.
2. Macbeth has made his decision to kill the King and take the crown as his own. Inspired in part by his own ambition, the decision to murder Duncan is aided by the prophecies of the Witches as well as the insistent urging of his wife. Still, Macbeth is wracked with guilt over what he is about to do, and his mind races with thoughts of such evil action. He first sees a dagger hanging mid-air, and then he sees it with blood dripping from it.
