The double helix model of DNA is a structure that describes the fundamental mechanism of heredity. James Watson and Francis Crick proposed this model in 1953, based on X-ray diffraction images taken by Rosalind Franklin and Maurice Wilkins. The double helix model of DNA has two strands of nucleotides that wind around each other in a spiral shape, forming a twisted ladder or staircase-like structure.

The two strands of DNA are held together by hydrogen bonds between the nitrogenous base pairs. The four nitrogenous bases found in DNA are adenine (A), thymine (T), guanine (G), and cytosine (C).
