The principle of discrimination is a prescriptive principle: It states how people should think about killing in war. In the present paper, we address three descriptive questions relevant to understanding the principle of discrimination, focusing on how third-party judges do, in fact, evaluate killing in war. First, we ask which features distinguish between the “soldier” and “civilian” categories, drawing on research on person perception to uncover the distinctive characteristics of the soldier stereotype. Second, we investigate whether people make moral judgments about the killing of  soldiers and civilians in a way that corresponds to the principle of discrimination. Third, we ask: Does it matter what the soldier is fighting for?
