The Narmada Bachao Andolan (NBA) is one of the most prominent non-violent social movements in post-Gandhian India. Rooted in the Gandhian ethos of peaceful resistance and civil disobedience, the NBA emerged in the 1980s in response to the large-scale displacement and environmental degradation caused by the construction of dams on the Narmada River, especially the Sardar Sarovar Dam. Led by Medha Patkar, Baba Amte, and other activists, the movement mobilized affected communities, particularly tribals, farmers, and marginalized groups, to protest against state-led developmental projects that overlooked human and ecological costs.
