Emergency contraception (EC) refers to the use of contraceptive methods after unprotected sexual intercourse, contraceptive failure, or sexual assault to prevent unintended pregnancy. EC is different from regular contraception because it is used after intercourse rather than before or during. Emergency contraception is also known as the morning-after pill or post-coital contraception.

There are several types of EC methods available. The most commonly used method is a pill that contains levonorgestrel, a synthetic hormone similar to progesterone, which is used as a regular birth control pill. The other types of emergency contraception include the copper intrauterine device (IUD) and a high dose of estrogen and progestin pills.
