Cleft Lip:
1. Visible Separation: The primary characteristic of a cleft lip is a visible separation or gap in the upper lip. This gap can range from a small notch to a complete split that extends to the nose.
2. Unilateral or Bilateral: Cleft lips can occur unilaterally (on one side) or bilaterally (on both sides). Unilateral clefts are more common and often occur on the left side of the upper lip.
