The tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle, also known as the Krebs cycle or the citric acid cycle, is a series of biochemical reactions that occur in the mitochondria of eukaryotic cells and the cytoplasm of prokaryotic cells. The cycle plays a crucial role in cellular respiration, producing ATP, which is used to power many cellular processes.

The TCA cycle begins with the conversion of pyruvate, the end product of glycolysis, into acetyl-CoA. This step is catalyzed by the enzyme pyruvate dehydrogenase and occurs in the mitochondria.

Once in the mitochondria, acetyl-CoA combines with oxaloacetate to form citrate, which is catalyzed by the enzyme citrate synthase. The citrate is then converted into isocitrate by the enzyme aconitase.
