Leachate is the liquid that percolates through solid waste in a landfill and accumulates dissolved and suspended materials from the waste mass. It is a complex and highly contaminated liquid that often contains organic matter, inorganic salts, heavy metals, nitrogen compounds, and toxic substances. If not properly managed, leachate poses serious threats to soil, groundwater, and surface water quality.
